7 Safety Tips Every RC ( Remote Control )  LiPo Battery User Should Know

RC LiPo batteries have many applications in mobile and electronic devices such as RC Drone Car. These batteries are generally safer and more environmental friendly as compared to all other RC batteries such as NiCd and NiMH. However, if improperly handled they can be very dangerous. In extreme cases they might even explode—not the nicest fact to know. It is in this regard we will discuss some safety precautions to take when using LiPo batteries.

In extreme cases they might even explode—not the nicest fact to know. It is in this regard we will discuss some safety precautions to take when using LiPo batteries.

 

1. Use the Recommended Charging and Discharging Current, Voltage, and Temperature

Every RC LiPo battery comes with product charging and discharging specifications. It is imperative to realize that it should be charged or discharged by a current less than the maximum charge indicated. Higher charge causes cell damage, heat leakage, and compromises safety. The same cases apply for voltage. If the specification indicates maximum charging voltage to be 4.2V/cell charging beyond 4.25V is not recommended. Importantly, LiPo battery charging and discharging temperature falls within 10°C-45°C and 20°C-60°C respectively. Never attempt to reverse charge a LiPo battery.

 

2. Never Charge a Damaged LiPo battery

It is prohibited to use, charge, discharge, or store a puffy RC LiPo battery. Importantly you should avoid purchasing a used LiPo battery because you never know the things the previous owner used to do with it. Always use the proper disposal protocol to get rid of a damaged LiPo battery.

 

3. Storage Conditions Matters

A LiPo battery should always be stored in an environment with a temperature range of 10°C-45°C. if you intend to store it for more than three months, you must make sure that it is under the conditions listed below.

 

  • Temperature- 23±5°C
  • Humidity- 65±20%RH
  • Voltage Range- 3.6V-3.9V

 

4. Understand LiPo Battery Capacity and Size

RC LiPo battery capacity is measured in milli-Amp hours (mAH). In simple, this serves as an indication of how much current can be drawn for an hour from the battery to empty it. For instance, if the battery is indicated 1500 mAH, it means you can draw a current of 1.5A for an hour to completely discharge it. Always know your battery's capacity in order to understand its extent of use.

 

5. Be Careful how you Handle LiPo Batteries

RC LiPo batteries come in soft packaging. It is of the paramount essence to understand that aluminum foil packaging can easily be damaged by sharp edges. That is why you should always:

 

  • Use gloves or trim your nails before handling it
  • Make sure the worktable is free of clutter and debris
  • Never strike LiPo battery with sharp edges
  • Never Bend or fold the seals
  • Don't drop it or hit the battery body
  • Never short the terminals

 

6. Storage Material is Key when Charging, Discharging, or Travelling

When charging, discharging, or travelling with the battery, it is always recommended to use an ammo box, a fireproof LiPo safety bag or any other safety container for that matter. While statistics show that LiPo fires are rare, sometimes accidents happen. All it takes is a spark from an internal short circuit to set the battery ablaze. Importantly, overcharged batteries may cause a fire. Make sure you don't place too many batteries in your safety container for effectiveness. Importantly, it is of the paramount essence to follow the manufacturer's specification on the number of LiPo batteries a container can safely carry.

 

7. Recommendations for Assembling Battery Pack

If you are planning to connect your battery to PCM or other parts you should always take great care. The most recommended method is spot welding or ultrasonic welding. Importantly you may go for soldering. In the latter method, using the manual approach is always a great plus. When assembling LiPo battery pack you should never:

 

  • Directly heat battery body
  • Exceed 3s while soldering
  • Exceed a temperature of 350°C
  • Solder more than 5 times per session—always let the battery tab cool before next soldering session

 

Final Thoughts

RC LiPo batteries are very safe when handled correctly. However, failing to follow the guidelines discussed above can make them extremely dangerous. Always remember it is always better safe than sorry. Importantly, the manufacturers or the dealers will not take any responsibility as a result of accidents caused by recklessness. Whether using it in a RC Drone Car or any other application, follow all the safety recommendations and you will mitigate the problem of explosions and unnecessary fires.
